More information

The data covers:

  • the numbers of patients aged 18 and over leaving hospital
  • where they are discharged to
  • the reasons for patients remaining in hospital (reason to reside).

Acute Trusts with a type 1 emergency care department and the Nightingale hospitals must submit aggregate data to NHS England and NHS Improvement daily, via NHS Digital’s Strategic Data Collection Service. The data is used by NHS England to monitor the success of the Hospital Discharge Service Policy and Operating Model.
